About the artist
Iris Band was born on May 6, 1961 in Meissen/Germany. Between 1976 and 1979, she attended evening classes in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. Between 1980 and 1986, she studied metal and enamel art as well as painting and graphical art which she successfully finished with a diploma in painting and graphical art. Since 1986, she has worked as a very successful freelance artist. Sshe was honoured with several prizes: in 1993 she was received the BP-Oil advancement award of the city of Brussels, 1994 the advancement award of the city of Halle, in 1995 the first prize of the city of Halle for her painting “Marktplatz”. In 1996, she was accepted for the promotion program of the Deutschen Kreditbank AG, in 1998 she obtained the award of the department for women policy of the city of Magdeburg, in 2002 she was awarded the third prize of the Martin-Luther-University of Halle-Wittenberg and in 2003 she received the third prize of “A postcard for Halle”. Thematically the artist focuses on the city landscape. She is inspired by the narrative element of architecture, the city structure and our longing for unknown places, which she takes up and transforms into a new fantastic architectural structure. Through her personal impression and engagement with the real localities, cities receive a new interpretation: she juxtaposes elements of the city like a patchwork and uses their symbolic character. They become symbols of their builders and icons of beauty. Analogous to urban processes of change where new buildings are constructed on top of older ones, the artist builds layer on layer and lets new things evolve from the flatness of her canvas or board. Her images develop from thick structures, which sometimes even consist of old left-overs from paintings or collages and of wooden pieces. Thus she creates a three dimensional, geometric second surface, a relief, on which the artist paints further layers of colour and lets the static structure of cityscapes emerge. The details of her landscape mesmerize her audience and turn them into little wonders, which never stop keeping the eyes busy. Iris Band has had numerous exhibitions and is represented by LDXArtodrome Gallery internationally.
