About the artist
Sergio Cortez was born in Irapuato (Mexico) in 1984. He lives and works in Leverkusen (Germany) since 2003 on the one hand as a psychotherapist and on the other hand as an artist in his own studio. The motivation for his artistic work comes from a combined interest in psychology and constructivism. He explores various ways of representing human emotional states and their effect on our perception through the play of line constructs and greatly re- duced splashes of color. For him, the human face stands as a bridge between the inside, which eludes our perception, and the outside, which is in constant change, but somehow seems more accessible. The faces in their different emo- tional states are wrapped in some kind of cloud, often only hinted at, and thus allow us to trace the universal psychic state of mind, even if emotions can only be felt individually. This creates a tension between the inner and the outer, the perception of the other and the subjectively felt, the universal and the indivi- dual. His pictures leave many white, empty spaces ready, in which the viewer‘s mind can „rest“, so to speak, in order to engage itself by ways of constructing its own interpretation.
