This photo was first shown at T.O.E. Art Market as part of the series “Medieval Traditions of Wood Architecture in Central Europe (Austria, Hungary and Slovakia)”, which can be viewed and purchased online in the Anna Linda Knoll Photography Private Collection’s gallery from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. This series consists of 32 photos for the first time. These works were completed between October 2024 and June 2026. The images were taken at six locations in three countries: Vienna in Austria, Hollókő (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Nyirbator and Kaposvar in Hungary, and Hronsek (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Banska Bystrica in Slovakia. The exhibition concept shows the logical connection between how wood, as a natural architectural material, has become a top-quality architectural feature since the Middle Ages, and how it has become the material for skyscrapers in Austria, which has the most advanced construction industry in the world, and thus sets a good example in the 21st century according to the sustainability criteria set by the UN as a basic value. Medieval people created their own security by building wooden towers that provided a view into the distance and thus a vision of the future. Over the centuries, the wooden tower, preserving the tradition of the element of the emergency signaling system (the bell), has been able to remain in its original form as a bell tower, primarily as a typical feature of sacred architecture, for people today. The value system that considers wood to be the highest quality and enduring building material for future generations was already known in the Middle Ages. When we get close to the wooden walls of buildings, we can see patterns in the wood that are hundreds of years old, which may not develop today, perhaps due to climate change, but this is not known. Woodworking technology in construction and interior design has shown tremendous progress in the 20th century, reminiscent of furniture production in Germany and Italy. This progress will not end in the 21st century in order to ensure that logging does not cause waste and to provide a century-long vision for its use. These trends are typical in Europe, the United States of America, Canada and Australia, and this topic remains equally important on all continents in different ways according to the tree types of the natural environment and cultural history. It is an amazing achievement that these wooden towers survived the fires of revolutions and the bombings of world wars, thanks to the fact that they were hidden by the lush foliage of tall trees. The first image in the series was created in honor of Marc Chagall and is dedicated to his memory, based on his painting “The House with the Green Eye” (1944). This window in Hronsek, Slovakia, reflects the beautiful natural environment that surrounds the wooden church, and the thousands of birds and millions of insects that live with the building, moving from trees into its walls and crevices. Tourists visiting here can hear the sound of the mountain babbling of the river Hron next to the wooden church. The American hit song “California Dreamin’” can be heard in the social media promotion of this online exhibition. Photographer Anna Linda Knoll is very satisfied with this work, it is one of her favorite subjects, which she would like to continue with further photo shoots in Eastern European countries. ENG: Anna Linda Knoll was born in Kaposvár, Somogy county, Hungary, Europe. Her father comes from an ancient Swabian family, and her mother is of Hungarian–Yugoslav (Croatian) descent. The artist has been living and working in Central Europe. Her ancient German surname is the same as that of the American inventors of Adobe Photoshop, the basic computer tool for digital photography.
