BIOGRAPHY ROX is a contemporary artist. Her art works are paintings and drawings made with mixed techniques in abstract art. She was born in Milan in 1962 and her name is Cristina Bertassello. She completed her language studies in London and Paris where she had the opportunity to discover her passion for art. Upon returning to Milan, she worked for a few years in a fashion photography studio where she had the opportunity to get in contact with great photographers of the mid-80s, including Giovanni Gastel who in that period was innovating fashion photography with wonderful still-life and portraits that made him famous in the coming years. In the following years she worked in various sectors with multinationals as a manager, which allowed her to travel a lot. Travelling has always been a bridge to different cultures and has allowed her to visit the most disparate museums, thus fueling her curiosity for art in its various forms of expression. For example, she has developed a passion for the nineteenth-century English painter Turner, Frida Kahlo, Klimt and Schiele to name just a few. Cinema, theater, literature have always accompanied her and fueled her spirit. In the 2000s she met Ivo Balderi, a professional photographer and video maker who became her partner. Then, the meeting with his father, Iginio Balderi, a great Tuscan sculptor artist, put her in direct contact with the world of art and their respective works, so different and so stimulating. The opening of the Atelier Balderi exhibition space in Milan in 2022 allowed her to meet artists of various genres and understand the organizational dynamics of this area. In recent years she has visited many art studios and met great masters with whom she has been able to spend time such as Erik Oldenhof, a Dutch painter, Hernst Hesse, a German sculptor and photographer. She met and greatly admires the work of Pino di Gennaro, a university professor at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, and many others. In 2024 she picked up brushes and began to paint. Totally self-taught, she creates her works by experimenting with different techniques. Her canvases are very often materic with the use of gesso, fabrics, paper and acrylic colors. The drawings are also abstract. Experimentation leads her to create works that, involuntarily or perhaps because they are hidden in her memory, sometimes recall or remind of other famous artists, in others, figures or images emerge that are not the result of a project, but of the dynamic that is created spontaneously with the canvas or with the watercolor paper and the result is never obvious or predetermined. Her first group exhibitions in 2025 have been in Egmond an See in Holland at the Conny Van Kasteel Gallery with the photographer Ivo Balderi; and at the Open One Gallery with other artists such as Iginio Balderi, Nicola Maggi, Michele Ferrari , Skim, Bart Herreman, Ivo Balderi, Erik Oldenhof. Someone about one of her canvases said: “This piece exemplifies a compelling blend of mixed techniques on canvas, inviting viewers into a textured, layered exploration of form and emotion. Its modest size belies the depth of complexity embedded within, making it a versatile addition to any contemporary art collection. The use of mixed techniques creates a dynamic surface that captures light and shadow differently from every angle, encouraging repeated engagement. A true testament to modern artistic expression, this work embodies innovation and personal narrative, resonating with both art enthusiasts and collectors alike”. Rox assigns a title to some works, because that is what she sees after having finished it, but it is not a given that that title is what other eyes capture. For example, the painting entitled Roots to others seems like a Sienese landscape. The doubt remains whether to communicate to others what the artist sees or leave the observer free to interpret and capture according to his own sensitivity. One certainty is that in her paintings and drawings she sees known and unknown places, people, emotions, fantasies, dreams and that is why she paints................................................. BIOGRAFIA ROX è un’artista contemporanea. I suoi lavori sono quadri e lavori su carta realizzati con tecniche miste in arte astratta. Nasce a Milano nel 1962 e si chiama Cristina Bertassello. completa i suoi studi di lingue a Londra e Parigi dove ha modo di scoprire la sua passione per l’arte. Al rientro a Milano lavora per alcuni anni in uno studio fotografico di moda dove ha modo di entrare in contatto con grandi fotografi della metà degli anni 80, tra cui Giovanni Gastel che in quel periodo innovava la foto di moda con meravigliosi still-life e ritratti che poi l’hanno reso famoso. Negli anni successivi ha lavorato in diversi settori con multinazionali come dirigente cosa che le ha consentito di viaggiare molto. I viaggi sono sempre stati un ponte verso culture diverse e le hanno consentito di visitare i musei più disparati alimentando così la sua curiosità per l’arte nelle sue varie forme espressive. Si è appassionata ad esempio al pittore ottocentesco inglese Turner, a Frida Kahlo, Klimt e Schiele per citarne solo alcuni. Cinema, teatro, letteratura l’hanno sempre accompagnata e alimentato il suo spirito. Negli anni 2000 incontra Ivo Balderi, fotografo e videomaker professionista che diventa il suo compagno. Da lì l’incontro con suo padre, Iginio Balderi, grande artista scultore toscano la mettono in contatto diretto con il mondo dell’arte e con i loro lavori così diversi e così stimolanti. L’apertura dello spazio espositivo Atelier Balderi a Milano nel 2022 le consente di incontrare artisti di vario genere e capire le dinamiche organizzative di questo ambiente. In questi ultimi anni ha visitato moltissimi studi artistici e conosciuto grandi maestri con cui ha potuto trascorrere del tempo quali Erik Oldenhof, pittore olandese, Hernst Hesse, scultore e fotografo tedesco. Ha conosciuto ed ammira molto il lavoro di Pino di Gennaro, docente universitario dell’accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, e molti altri. Nel 2024 prende in mano i pennelli e comincia a dipingere. Totalmente autodidatta, crea i suoi lavori sperimentando diverse tecniche. Le sue tele sono molto spesso materiche con utilizzo di gesso, tessuti, carta e colori acrilici. Anche i disegni sono astratti. La sperimentazione la porta a creare opere che, involontariamente o forse perché nascosti nella sua memoria, a volte richiamano o ricordano altri artisti famosi, in altri emergono figure o immagini che non sono frutto di un progetto, bensì della dinamica che si crea spontaneamente con la tela o con la carta dell’acquerello ed il risultato non è mai scontato o predeterminato. Le sue prime mostre collettive nel 2025 sono state a Egmond an See In Olanda alla Galleria Conny Van Kasteel esponendo i suoi lavori con il fotografo Ivo Balderi; a Pietrasanta alla Galleria Open One con artisti quali Iginio Balderi, Skim, Michele Ferrari, Bart Herreman, Nicola Maggi, Ivo Balderi, Erik Oldenhof. Qualcuno di un suo quadro ha detto: “questo pezzo esemplifica un’avvincente miscela di tecniche miste su tela, invitando gli spettatori a un’esplorazione materica e stratificata di forma ed emozione. Le sue modeste dimensioni smentiscono la profondità e la complessità che si racchiudono, rendendola un’aggiunta versatile a qualsiasi collezione d’arte contemporanea. L’uso di tecniche miste crea una superficie dinamica che cattura luce e ombra in modo diverso da ogni angolo, incoraggiando il coinvolgimento ripetuto. Una vera e propria testimonianza dell’espressione artistica moderna, quest’opera incarna innovazione e narrazione personale, perfetta sia per gli appassionati d’arte che per i collezionisti”. Ad alcuni lavori Rox assegna un titolo, perché è quello che vede lei dopo averlo finito, ma non è detto che quel titolo sia quello che altri occhi colgono. Ad esempio, il quadro intitolato Radici ad altri sembra un paesaggio senese. Resta il dubbio se comunicare agli altri quello che vede l’artista o lascare libero l’osservatore di interpretare e cogliere secondo la propria sensibilità. Una certezza è che lei nei suoi quadri e disegni vede luoghi conosciuti e no, persone, emozioni, fantasie, sogni ed è per questo che dipinge.
